Maternity Coverage:
In lieu of a full maternity insurance plan, this page will give you some options that will help you lower your maternity costs and pay for some of the delivery.
The Facts
1. Both normal and c-section deliveries are almost always available for a flat fee from most hospitals. The typical rates for vaginal deliveries have been between $2200 and $3500 (without complications). This does not include pre-natal care. You can negotiate fees with a hospital. You do not necessarily need to buy an expensive discount card to do this.
Simply call the hospital and ask them if they have a maternity flat fee. That is all there is to it.
2. Most major medical plans will cover complications to pregnancy as long as you have not previously had a c-section. So, even if you do not have maternity coverage, an emergency c-section will still be covered.
3. Maternity insurance plans are no longer available But, you can get a portion of your hospital bill paid with a very low cost plan.
Maternity Insurance Plan
In the past we had a number of different maternity coverage alternatives. They have all been eliminated by the carriers. New plans face an uphill battle to get their plans approved.
However, we do have one excellent plan that is very low cost. I cannot imagine anyone who plans to become pregnant not taking this plan. Unless it takes you a few years to become pregnant, you will come out ahead.
The plan costs about $40 a month. If you are in the hospital for two days with a normal delivery, the plan will pay you $2,400.
There is a 10 month wait before they will pay out for maternity.
Now do the math. You buy the plan, wait a month or two and get pregnant. You hold the plan for 12 months. It costs you about $480 and they pay you $2,400. Do I need to say any more?
